Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner
Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner
The stock AMC/Jeep air intake is not a bad design at all. A lot of other vehicles require modifications for a “Cold Air Intake” aka a CAI.
The Jeep design is actually already a CAI because it draws air from behind the front grille panel. When cold, a vacuum motor opens a flap and allows air to be drawn from over the passenger side exhaust manifold with the idea being that the exhaust manifold will warm up faster, thus aiding in warming up the engine. This works well on a stock 360.
However, since I now have a rebuilt 401 with high compression pistons and an Edelbrock Performer Plus cam and Performer intake, the stock air cleaner was not going to work well anymore. I could hear it trying to suck air in.
Internal combustion engines are essentially air pumps. They ingest air, make power and then expel air. The more air you can move through the engine, the more power you can make.
I took a donor stock air cleaner and cut out the snorkel section and bolted it onto another air cleaner after making a hole for the new snorkel intake. I teed the vacuum likes after the delay valves so that both snorkels `have working flaps. The pictures show it best:
Here is the completed dual snorkel intake. There is already another rectangular hole underneath the coolant reservoir on the driver’s side. Grab the plastic “connector” from a junkyard truck and you can screw it in place to connect the second hose. The screw holes are already there for you!
The donor air cleaner with the snorkel cut off. I cut out a “test” hole in my donor air cleaner to make sure I could cut it correctly before messing with the actual air cleaner that I intended to use.
This photo shows three of the six bolts I used to attach the second snorkel to the air cleaner body. I used button head hex bolts. They are black and wider than regular bolt heads. This eliminates the need for shiny washers and the black helps it blend in. Obviously, for the inside, I didn’t care. I also used silicone to seal the snorkel. You don’t have to use orange high temp sealant like I did. The orange stuff was all that I had at the moment.
These two photos show the clearances. I could have cut off the second snorkel’s hot air intake, but that would have been extra work and I chose to leave it alone. As seen in the second photo, the air injection hose will have to be shortened a little so it’s not so squished.
